Ink & Watercolor Video
This is a follow-up on my last post on sketching with ink and watercolor. I’ve put together a short video to take you to the North Cascades mountains and demonstrate how I completed one large ink and watercolor sketch. I hope you enjoy it! Beautiful work, M and D! Gorgeous scenery– you both bring it alive by ink, paint, camera, and narrative. That you work from right to left intrigues me. Would that have to do with farther to nearer, or more your body use in drawing and brushing?

Maria – Having attended your Daniel Smith workshop in Seattle, this was like an extended view of what you did that day. But, this was great…so cool to see you working through the image. I so love this painting…seeing it brought to life by you was a real joy.
The video allows one to see the image before your eyes and your interpretation of the scene. Thank you for posting this and allowing this glimpse into your work. I’m curios, did you mix the colors you used while in the field or did you take a special palette that incorporated the earth tones used?

Hi Bishop,
I typically have a few neutral/earth tone pigments with me, such as Lunar Earth, Neutral Tint, Quinacridone Burnt Orange, and Quinacridone Gold (all Daniel Smith). I love mixing colors, either on my palette or on the paper. On this portion of my trip, I carried two of my Pocket Palettes, so I had a good variety of pigments to play with.

Great to see you work, Maria. Curious what watercolour paper or sketchbook are you using? Such a big sheet…out on the mountain. :)

Hi Zoe, I’m working on a 15″ x 30″ piece of Arches Cream Cover paper. I have home-made paper folio (made with gatorboard) that I use for carrying paper and as a drawing support. I’ll plan on showing more of my equipment in a future post.Thank you!
