Tearing Paper
To follow up my post on flattening large watercolor paper, I want to show you how I tear it! Using a straight edge to tear instead of cutting with an exacto or paper cutter gives a beautiful irregular edge, similar to a deckle. A metal ruler works well on smaller scale works and I love my 42″ Pacific Arc Steel tear bar for big pieces.

I do this as well, but I also have a metal deckle tearing ruler that does an even better job.

I’ll have to try a deckle ruler sometime, I’ve seen them with the rippled edge. I find I can do a good “artistic” edge with my tear bar if I vary the angle and speed I pull my paper, but it takes attention.
