My sled dog explorations have continued and I think I’m coming to the end of the 5″ x 5″ series. I departed from the colorful solid backgrounds to paint these three. I like how the negative space of the white paper conveys the brilliant arctic light.

Maria, I think these are some of your best work. I love the stark contrast of the white background, it really makes the dogs pop out.

Thank you, Charles! I enjoy working with the negative white space.

I have to ask: Did you just wake up one morning and say, Gee, I think I’ll find the coldest place in No. America and paint with watercolor? How did this Arctic journey/journal come to be?
Maria
Hi Joan, good question! My father is an oceanographer with a focus on sea ice, I grew curious about the polar regions from a young age. After spending a summer on glaciers in SE Alaska I was hooked on the colors, space, and atmosphere. I recently gave a 15min presentation that’s online if you’d like more of the story :): http://www.girls-can-do.com/Maria%20Coryell-Martin/ (skip the 1.5min intro).
