Antarctic Art Contest
Explore the world through art and science! This Antarctic Art Contest is a great opportunity to interpret the West Antarctica Ice Sheet (WAIS) environment and WAIS divide ice core data. There are three divisions, elementary, secondary, and community. Winners will have their work exhibited at the National Science Foundation in Washington D.C., Museum of the North in Fairbanks, Alaska, and in Antarctica during the 2016/2017 field season. I’m pleased to participate as one of the judges! The submission website opens on April 1st, 2015, and closes July 31, 2015. Winners will be announced September 15, 2015.
There are parallels between art and science, how both perceive and interpret the world, using creativity to inspire and inform others.

How can you paint Antarctica without going there? I’d love to participate but would have to use reference photos.

Yes, Helen! You can use reference photos as well as the available scientific data and stories. I’d say as an art contest, too, that there is lots of room for “creative license” :). Have fun with it!
