Tabular Icebergs

I completed this large painting in 2007 after visiting Antarctica the previous fall as artist-in-residence with Quark Expeditions. During the voyage, we visited several Emperor penguin colonies, using helicopters to travel from the icebreaker to within a couple kilometers of the birds. I relished the helicopter flights and this painting was inspired by the huge tabular icebergs I saw from above. The scale of these bergs was unlike anything I’d ever experienced as their sides rose over a thousand feet high. Their puzzle piece pattern of shapes appealed to my aesthetic sense as well.
