This month I completed two teaching residencies at Islandwood, an inspiring outdoor learning center on Bainbridge Island. I gave a series of workshops both to adults (graduate students and staff) and to visiting students who ranged from grades 4-6.

The sessions began indoors with an introduction to expeditionary art, followed by each student folding their own accordion journal. Then we headed outside where I introduced techniques to the group and gave everyone time to sketch independently with pen, pencil, and watercolor paints.
The students impressed me with their solo focus. Time to reflect and pay attention to the world is incredibly valuable, we could all use more of it!

Hi Maria,
What a great way to connect to our environment to draw or paint what you see, hear, smell and feel when outdoors. I will try that on my next plain air expedition.
