At the heart of working in remote regions is getting to them in the first place. The Twin Otter aircraft is a beloved bush plane known for its reliability, rugged construction, and short take-off and landing requirements. This particular Twin Otter is owned by Air Greenland and I happened upon it when I arrived in Greenland in 2005, having come nearly directly from the Malian desert in West Africa (I don’t recommend the transition between 100+ heat to the spring Arctic!). Cold and culture-shocked, I visited the Air Greenland hanger in search of a warm place to sketch while also thinking that pilots might be good people to meet for an adventure… The pilots and mechanics welcomed me and this plane had just flown in from Iceland. I was informed by the pilot that the plane was shot down in the Korean War, after which Air Greenland purchased and refurbished it. Not only is it a practical plane, but I love the red paint job.
