I grew up in the Pacific NW and spent five years away, studying in school (Carleton College) and traveling around the world. While gone, I missed not just my family, but the landscape. I’ve come to realize that the rain and grew of the Pacific NW is part of what nurtures me. It envelopes me and can bring a sense of comfort and quiet. (Not to say that I don’t thrive in the sunshine when we have it!) This painting was inspired by a hike out of Mt. Baker through the clouds and from my own aesthetic interest in Asian painting, particularly from Japan. I lived in Japan with my family when I was young for a bit and was mentored by a Japanese traditional brush-maker. Learn more about my time in Japan here.
