Antarctica 2008

For the month of February 2008, I joined Quark Expeditions as artist-in-residence for a voyage from Ushuaia on the southern tip of Argentina to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and down to the Antarctic Peninsula. It was an amazing opportunity to paint the fragile ecosystems of the Southern Ocean. South Georgia was particularly rich with diverse wildlife, where we visited King Penguin colonies and dodged Fur and Elephant seals. Also of historical interest on South Georgia was the great explorer Shackleton’s grave at the former whaling station, Grytviken.

The privilege of visiting these regions compounds my sense of social responsibility to build environmental awareness. The “expedition tourism” I participated with has an impact- 100+ people going ashore and traveling on a ship that burns 20 tons of a fuel a day. Fortunately all visitors follow an internationally agreed upon protocol.

Thank you to everyone who shared the adventure!
