Kent Opening

I had a wonderful time last week at the Kent Summer Art Exhibit opening gala! Thank you to everyone who came. It was lovely to see so much beautiful artwork and I’m also delighted that my paintings tied for 3rd place for the People’s Choice Award. The paintings will be on exhibit at the Centennial Gallery through August 27th.

Busy & Fun Week

I’m home in Twisp after a busy and fun week in Seattle. Polar Science Weekend was a success- I hung four framed watercolors from my new Antarctic Iceberg series and brought a number of my field sketchbooks, supplies, and some handouts to share with the visitors. I also made a “How to Draw a Penguin in 5 Steps” worksheet this year that was especially popular with younger kids.

Polar Science Weekend was a great opportunity to meet families and people of all ages as well as the local scientific community who I hope to continue collaborating with. I do truly believe that art and science overlap through making observations and cultivating curiosity. While I love my personal time out sketching and in the studio, I’m delighted to share the art of sketching and nature journaling with others to encourage awareness of the environment.

On that note, following Polar Science Weekend, I gave a presentation and series of workshops for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at the University Child Development School in Seattle. It’s a lovely school with wonderful kids! I look forward to working with them again soon. Polar Science Weekend

Come by the Pacific Science Center in Seattle for Polar Science Weekend! The four day event (from Feb 25 – 28) features hands-on activities, demonstrations, and exhibits by scientists and groups around Puget Sound who study the polar regions. I’ll have new Antarctica watercolors (such as the one featured above) on exhibit for the whole event and will be there all day in person on Friday and Saturday with my field sketchbooks, prints, greeting cards, and art activities. I hope you can make it!

Shades of Fall

This past Saturday I had a lovely time with my North Cascades Institute workshop, Shades of Fall. We began the day with practicing tools of observation and continued with watercolor painting out of pocket mint-tin palettes. The colors in the Arboretum are just beginning to change and it was great fun to come upon trees glowing yellow and orange in the sunlight. Thank you to all who joined me!

I’m moving from Seattle to Twisp in the Methow Valley at the end of July! While cleaning out my studio, I’ve found all sorts of gems of artwork. Workshop: Keeping a Travel Journal

I’m rediscovering printmaking (from my days at Carleton College) and am having such fun making small linoleum prints (and a mess in my studio). I’m working small and think that the prints will be a lovely studio complement to my field sketches. I’m planning to have a whole series completed in time for the Greenwood-Phinney Artwalk- come by and check them out!

Bookmaking Class

Learn to create your own journals and sketchbooks book with me! This Wednesday, Aprill 22nd is the beginning of my North Seattle Community College bookmaking class which will continue Wednesday evenings 6:3opm – 9:30pm at the Sand Point Education Center. We make simple pamphlets, accordion style, casebound books and I will also share journaling techniques. I’d be delighted to have you join me!

Show Opening

Join me this Saturday March 7 for the opening of Confluence: Artists of the North Cascades Institute at the Smith|Valley gallery in Edison, WA. Other artists include Subhankar Banerjee and my friends Benj Drummond and Molly Hashimoto. The artist reception festivities from 5pm – 7pm. I hope to see you there!
